KYOCERA Announces Consolidated Financial Results for Year Ended March 31, 2015

KYOTO, Japan--( BUSINESS WIRE )--Kyocera Corporation (NYSE:KYO)(TOKYO:6971) today announced its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, as summarized below. Complete details are available at: http://global.kyocera.com/ir/financial/f_results.html

Consolidated Results Summary

With regard to the principal markets served by Kyocera Corporation and its consolidated subsidiaries (the “Kyocera Group” or “Kyocera”), the year ended March 31, 2015 (“the period”) brought rising demand for smartphones, as well as increased sales of automobiles especially in the United States and China. Japan’s solar energy market slowed due to the end of subsidies for new residential solar power systems and the suspension of utility-grid access applications.

Kyocera recorded its highest annual consolidated revenue for the second consecutive year, led by increased sales in its Components Business, which mainly serves producers of automobiles, smartphones, telecommunications infrastructure, and industrial machinery. The company’s Equipment Business also recorded sales growth, particularly outside of Japan, due to the launch of new products and outreach to new customers. Profit increased in the Fine Ceramic Parts Group, Semiconductor Parts Group, Electronic Device Group and Information Equipment Group due to higher sales and successful cost containment. Nonetheless, Kyocera’s consolidated results in profit from operations and income before income taxes decreased, due mainly to the recording of losses related to asset impairments in the Applied Ceramic Products Group and Telecommunications Equipment Group.

In summary, consolidated net sales increased 5.5% over the prior period, to JPY1,526,536 (USD12,721) million profit from operations decreased 22.5%, to JPY93,428 (USD779) million and income before income taxes decreased 16.7%, to JPY121,862 (USD1,016) million. Net income attributable to shareholders of Kyocera Corporation increased 30.6%, to JPY115,875 (USD966) million, due primarily to the revaluation of deferred tax assets and liabilities in line with a revision of the Japanese tax system, resulting in an increase of approximately JPY36,300 (USD303) million.

Consolidated Forecast: Year Ending March 31, 2016

During the year ending March 31, 2016 (“Fiscal 2016”), the Japanese economy is expected to head toward recovery as personal consumption and private capital investment rebound. The European economy is expected to continue expanding moderately, while the U.S. economic forecast calls for steady growth.

With regard to Kyocera’s core markets, component demand is expected to increase in the information and communications field, based on continued growth in sales of smartphones and infrastructure equipment such as telecommunications base stations. In automotive markets, Kyocera forecasts higher demand for electronic components and devices due to expanding automobile production and the rising electronic content of in-vehicle safety and emissions systems. In the environment and energy market, demand for Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) and power-storage units is expected to grow despite an anticipated contraction in Japan’s solar energy market.

Kyocera will strive to capitalize on expanding markets and strengthen production capacity in both the Components Business and Equipment Business with the aim of achieving record sales for the third consecutive year. At the same time, efforts will be made to boost profitability through comprehensive cost containment in order to achieve full-year consolidated financial forecasts.

Marchers Danced Through Rain at 2015 NY Israel Day Parade

The J Screen genetic screening organization was only one of hundreds of groups who marched up New York's Fifth Avenue at the Israel Day Parade.

Parents carried little ones on their shoulders, and held five-year-old children by the hand. Older children gripped their blue-and-white flags tightly and waved them in the breeze as the marching bands played music to dance by — some of them not understand the tears in their grandparents’ eyes.

Tens of thousands of Jews turned out Sunday (May 31) to show their pride in being Jewish, in their visceral connection to the Jewish State, the reborn State of Israel. Politics aside, military threat aside, Israel’s desire for peace was in citywide evidence in the very theme for the event: “Israel Imagines Peace.”

Sponsored by some 35 organizations that included the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, the government of the State of Israel and the UJA Federation, this year’s lineup featured some 40,000 marchers, according to UJA Federation CEO Eric Goldstein.

This year’s Grand Marshals were two representatives for the Russian-speaking Jewish community, Alan Meskin and Angela Reyzelman. “Jews originating from the Soviet Union were instrumental builders and warriors of the State of Israel and also directly benefited from the creation of the state in 1948, as for many, Israel became a safe haven, a land of opportunity and a new home,” explained organizers on the Celebrate Israel New York (CelebrateIsraelNY) website.

Representing the State of Israel were Ambassador Ido Aharoni, Consul General of Israel in New York Science, Technology & Space Minister Danny Danon and Minister Without Portfolio Ofir Akunis. Also marching were Knesset Members Yoav Ben-Tzur, Avraham Nagosa, Ksenia Svetlov and Revital Sweid.

Numerous prominent Jewish personalities participated in the parade Dr. Ruth Westheimer made a surprise appearance as well, telling FOX television co-anchor Becky Griffin: “It is very important to support this parade, especially today… Imagine living with a Palestinian neighbor, and everyone living in peace – that’s the most important thing for you and me.”

At least 100,000 people lined both sides of Fifth Avenue to watch the marchers make their way up the famous avenue from 57th Street to 74th Street.

Marching up Fifth Avenue. The parade seemed endless.

The New York Police Department’s Shomrim Society — the organization of Jewish police officers — was one of the first groups to lead off the parade, as always. The city’s Fire Department also marched, as it does to honor every ethnicity in New York, most of whom are also represented on the force as well.

The parade stepped off at 11 am and continued through until 3pm at about 2 pm, a light rain began to fall on marchers and spectators – but no one paid any attention to the droplets.

Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center was also represented at the parade.

“This year’s parade is the largest in the history of the event,” JCRC executive vice president and CEO Michael Miller smiled. “Next year it will be just as big – if not bigger!,” he added.

Perhaps the group that summed up the experience best was RAJE, the Russian American Jewish Experience, which ran the banner, “Let My People Know!”

1. Methodology and Significant Assumptions

The future-oriented statement of operations has been prepared on the basis of government priorities and the plans of the Agency as described in the Report on Plans and Priorities.

The information in the estimated results for fiscal year 2014–15 is based on the actual results as at November 30, 2014, and on forecasts for the remainder of the fiscal year. Forecasts have been made for the planned results for the 2015–16 fiscal year.

The main assumptions underlying the forecasts are as follows:

  • The Agency’s activities will remain substantially the same as in the previous year.
  • Expenses and revenues, including the determination of amounts internal and external to the government, are based on historical experience. The general historical pattern is expected to continue.
  • Estimated results for 2014–15 are used as the opening position for the planned results for 2015–16.

These assumptions are adopted as at November 30, 2014.

2. Variations and Changes to the Forecast Financial Information

While every attempt has been made to forecast final results for the remainder of 2014–15 and for 2015–16, actual results achieved for both fiscal years are likely to vary from the forecast information presented, and this variation could be material.

In preparing this future-oriented financial statement of operations, the Agency has made estimates and assumptions concerning the future. These estimates and assumptions may differ from the subsequent actual results. Estimates and assumptions are continually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances.

Factors that could lead to material differences between the future-oriented statement of operations and the historical statement of operations include:

  • The timing and amounts of acquisitions and disposals of property, plant and equipment may affect gains/losses and amortization expense.
  • Implementation of new collective agreements.
  • Economic conditions may affect the amount of revenue earned.
  • Further changes to the operating budget through additional new initiatives or technical adjustments later in the year.

Once the Report on Plans and Priorities is presented, the Agency will not be updating the forecasts for any changes to appropriations or forecast financial information made in ensuing supplementary estimates. Variances will be explained in the Departmental Performance Report.

3. Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

The future-oriented statement of operations has been prepared using the Government’s accounting policies that came into effect for the 2014–15 fiscal year, which are based on Canadian public sector accounting standards. The presentation and results using the stated accounting policies do not result in any significant differences from Canadian public sector accounting standards.

Significant accounting policies are as follows:

  1. Expenses - Expenses are recorded on an accrual basis:
    • Expenses for the Agency’s operations are recorded when goods are received or services are rendered, including services provided without charge for accommodation, employee contributions to health and dental insurance plans, legal services and worker’s compensation, which are recorded as expenses at their estimated cost.
    • Vacation pay and compensatory leave, as well as severance benefits are accrued as the benefits are earned by employees under their respective terms of employment.
    • Transfer payments are recorded as expenses when authorization for the payment exists and the recipient has met the eligibility criteria or the entitlements established for the transfer payment program. In situations where payments do not form part of an existing program, transfer payments are recorded as expenses when the Government announces a decision to make a non-recurring transfer, provided the enabling legislation or authorization for payment receives parliamentary approval prior to the completion of the financial statements. Transfer payments that become repayable as a result of conditions specified in the contribution agreement that have come into being are recorded as a reduction to transfer payment expense and as a receivable.
    • Expenses also include provisions to reflect changes in the value of assets, including provisions for bad debt on accounts receivable, provision for valuation on loans, investments and advances or liabilities, including contingent liabilities and environmental liabilities to the extent the future event is likely to occur and a reasonable estimate can be made.
    • Expenses also include amortization of tangible capital assets, which are capitalized at their acquisition cost. Amortization of tangible capital assets is done on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful life of the asset.
  2. Revenues:
    • Revenues are accounted for in the period in which the underlying transaction or event that gave rise to the revenue takes place.
    • Revenues that are non-respendable are not available to discharge the Agency’s liabilities. While the deputy head is expected to maintain accounting control, he or she has no authority regarding the disposition of non-respendable revenues. As a result, non-respendable revenues are considered to be earned on behalf of the Government of Canada and are therefore presented as a reduction of the entity's gross revenues.

4. Parliamentary authorities

The Agency receives most of its funding through annual parliamentary authorities. Financial reporting of authorities provided to the Agency do not parallel financial reporting according to generally accepted accounting principles since authorities are primarily based on cash flow requirements. Items recognized in the future-oriented statement of operations in one year may be funded through parliamentary authorities in prior, current or future years. Accordingly, the Agency has different net cost of operations for the year on a government funding basis than on an accrual accounting basis. The differences are reconciled in the following tables:

(a) Reconciliation of net cost of operations to requested authorities:
(in thousands of dollars) Estimated
2014–15
Planned
2015–16
Net cost of operations 676,035 584,747
Adjustments for items affecting net cost of operations but not affecting authorities:
Amortization of tangible capital assets (12,993) (12,877)
Loss on disposal of tangible capital assets (254) 0
Services provided without charge by other government departments (23,611) (22,991)

March 2015 Current Events: U.S. News

Here are the key events in United States news for the month of March 2015.

Justice Department Releases Report on Ferguson Police (March 4): The Justice Department releases a report showing that the Ferguson Police has discriminated against and violated the constitutional rights of the city's African-American residents. Using data from 2012-2014, the report includes stats such as 93% of the arrests made during that time were black citizens, based on an African-American population of 67% in Ferguson, Missouri. The report includes examples of racist remarks used in emails and interviews by Ferguson police and court officials, as well as incidents of tasers and dogs being used in excess on African-Americans. Through the emails and statements by police and court officials, the report also shows how those officials have been more focused on generating revenue, through fines and fees, than on the safety of the city's citizens. Overall, the report proves that the police department and city officials have been biased against the African-American citizens of Ferguson. Along with releasing the report, the Justice Department, which began their investigation into Ferguson after last year's shooting of Michael Brown, says it will not prosecute the shooter Darren Wilson. (March 11): Ferguson police chief Thomas Jackson resigns. Five other employees resign or are fired after the Justice Department released its report, including a municipal judge and the city manager. (March 12): During a protest, two St. Louis-area police officers are shot in front of the Ferguson Police Department. Both officers are seriously wounded. However, their injuries are not life threatening. The shots are believed to have come from a gunman on a hill more than 200 yards away from the police station, according to witnesses. A manhunt is underway for the shooter. (March 15): Twenty-year-old Jeffrey L. Williams is arrested and charged with shooting the two officers. Williams says he shot the two police officers by accident from a car. He claims he was shooting at someone else. Williams has been charged with first-degree assault. The shooting has increased tension between demonstrators and police in Ferguson.

Boston Marathon Bombing Trial Begins (March 4): The trial of alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev begins at the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse in South Boston, Massachusetts. During the trial's first day, Tsarnaev's attorneys surprise the court by admitting that he is responsible for the terror attack. Meanwhile, prosecutors show new video footage from the marathon scene and witnesses share their vivid, disturbing memories of that day. Tsarnaev faces a total of 30 charges, 17 of which come with the possibility of the death penalty.

Two Secret Service Agents Crash Car at White House (March 4): Two Secret Service agents crash through security tape and into a barricade at one of the White House entrances. Officials investigating the incident say that the two agents may have been drunk. This is the latest incident involving the Secret Service, which has been criticized and under investigation for other mishaps, including the White House security breaches last year. (March 24): Surveillance video footage is released showing the car driven by the two agents hitting a barricade around a suspicious package near the White House on March 4. The video provides evidence that the two agents interfered with a police investigation by hitting the barricade before crashing their car.

Supreme Court Hears Latest Challenge to Affordable Care Act (March 4): The Supreme Court begins hearing opening arguments in the challenge to King V Burwell. This latest case challenges the King V Burwell ruling made by a panel in Virginia which voted unanimously to uphold the Affordable Care Act despite the Internal Revenue Service rule that makes some people who buy insurance on federal exchanges eligible for subsidies. About seven million people are covered under the federal exchanges, and millions can lose coverage or pay more for it if the Supreme Court decides against the Obama administration.

Hillary Clinton Addresses Personal Email Use (March 10): In a press conference at United Nations headquarters, Hillary Rodham Clinton answers questions about her use of a private email account while she held the position of secretary of state. During the press conference, Clinton explains that she used one email account for convenience. "Looking back, it would've been better for me to use two separate phones and two email accounts," she says. (March 11): The Associated Press (AP) sues the U.S. State Department for the release of Clinton's email while she was secretary of state. This latest legal action follows several previous requests by AP, including one made five years ago. Filing the suit under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, AP is asking for correspondence relating to the Osama bin Laden raid and National Security Agency surveillance practices as well as emails with people likely to be involved in Clinton's probable campaign for the 2016 presidency.

Charlottesville Police Find No Evidence in University of Virginia Fraternity Rape Case (March 23): Police in Charlottesville, Virginia announce that they have found "no substantive" evidence in the University of Virginia fraternity gang rape case that Rolling Stone published a feature on last fall. After around 70 interviews and a four-month review, police investigators found "no evidence" that a party took place on Sept. 28, 2012, at the Phi Kappa Psi house where a woman identified in the Rolling Stone feature as Jackie said the rape occurred. Jackie has refused to cooperate with the Charlottesville police investigation. Another investigation, led by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, is still underway. Results from that investigation will be published in a few weeks.

New Religious Freedom Laws Cause Controversy (March 26): Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signs the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law. The new law causes an immediate backlash and boycott by those who feel it can be used to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals. Mayors in cities such as Seattle and San Francisco ban all official travel to Indiana. Businesses like Salesforce and Angie's List stop plans to expand within the state. Some Indiana business owners put signs in their windows that read "we serve everyone." The hashtag #BoycottIndiana trends on twitter. (March 31): The Arkansas Senate passes a similar Religious Freedom Restoration Act, also known as the Conscience Protection Act. Major businesses such as Apple, Acxiom, and Walmart publicly oppose the law. Doug McMillon, Walmart's CEO, urges Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson to veto the bill.

'PlayStation Home' Shuts Down In March 2015

After almost six years of service, Sony announces that 'PlayStation Home' will be closing its doors on March 31, 2015.

The PlayStation Network has played host to countless memorable services over the course of its history. From PlayStation Plus to Now, Sony has strived to push the envelope in terms of how gamers consume their favorite media. Then, there's PlayStation Home. Acting as part game, part social network, the service has become a love-it-or-hate-it affair. For the more invested users then, it will likely come as a blow to learn that the service will soon be closing its doors.

Beginning its life on the PS3 in December 2008, PlayStation Home has stood tall for over half a decade as the PS3's go-to social platform. Allowing users to customize their avatars and homes with purchased items, chat with others, and play minigames themed after upcoming and recent releases, it represented Sony's commitment to bringing people together. As of November 12, 2014, though, new content will no longer be coming to PlayStation Home with March 31, 2015 acting as the day the platform officially shuts down.

With Judgement Day approaching, Sony has announced that they will be releasing free content as thanks to the users who supported the platform over the years. This is not likely to ease the pain of those who have become regular users of the platform, but it's a generous gesture. With the platform having seen a complete redesign and the introduction of a host of in-app games, there's no denying that PlayStation Home has provided its share of fan-service.

Despite the fact that the servers will be going down come March 2015, does this really mark the end of PlayStation Home? While it may not have been an integral part of every user's PS3 repertoire, it certainly had a dedicated audience. Given this, it's entirely within reason to guess that sometime down the road, Sony may take another stab at the realm of interactive social platforms with a PS4 release.

By introducing a similar service that integrates more seamlessly with the PS4's existing user interface, they could easily make the platform a more attractive product. Given the frequency with which Sony provides updates to their console's UI, it wouldn't be a stretch for them to someday tailor it to something specific like a Tuis-like service. Regardless of whether this is the last gamers will see of PlayStation Home, it will no doubt be a bittersweet goodbye for the users who sunk countless hours and dollars into Sony's social construct.

Were you a regular user of PlayStation Home? Do you think Sony will attempt to make the jump to the PS4 with a comparable service?
